This is a very good Rudall Carte, the kind that demonstrates to anyone who has never played one just how fine and usable these classic flutes can be. It is in excellent condition: the wood has no cracks, apart from a minor hairline that we have repaired; the keywork has no wear or sideways movement, the pads are good, and the action under the fingers accurate and immediate. We have serviced the flute ready for sale.

The flute was made in 1887 by, we believe, Henri Schumacher, who is acknowledged as the finest of the several fine makers who came from Paris to work at Rudall Carte in this period. The design is slightly different, being the 'American model', and features Boehm and Mendler-style keywork, adjusting screws, and double rollers on the footjoint.

The flute plays easily, with the keys falling nicely under the fingers. The mechanism works with a light tough. The headjoint is slightly more free-blowing than other Cartes, so the flute sings with a clear voice, rich and even throughout the range.

Serviced ready for sale, the flute comes in its original case, with turned grease pot.
