Arthur Haswell Flute Repairs is a business run by Arthur and Tina Haswell. Established in 2000, it is now one of the United Kingdom's foremost specialist independent  flute workshops.

Working from home in the Northumbrian countryside, we are able to give each flute as much time as it needs. Many flutes present a series of sometimes inconsiderable problems that combine to compromise their feel, the way they play, and their reliability. We believe that a flute can only be brought up to top playing order by ensuring every component is functioning as it should.

Our determination to work slowly towards perfection rather than rushing a job is exemplified by our refusal to subject flutes to mechanical buffing machines. By undertaking all cleaning by hand we remove the risk of damage and produce a more detailed and superior finish. Similarly, all flutes are thoroughly played in and are only returned when we are completely satisfied.

We have been the official on-site repairer at the last three British Flute Society International Conventions (2006, 2008, 2010). These fabulous events bring hundreds of flautists together to listen to some of the top players from around the world. In addition, in 2010 we were delighted and honoured to be asked to give a pair of talks about flute repairing and maintenance. We have again been asked to talk at the forthcoming 2012 Convention on Flute Repairing and Conserving Vintage Flutes. And once again we shall be the repairers in residence, on hand to put right flutes for delegates and performers.

Testimonials

Brilliant work on my lovely old vintage Haynes - and it came back looking immaculate. Finally stable after years of problems.

Dear Arthur,

You're a genius. The (Rudall Carte) flute plays beautifully and the areas I had difficulty in before are wonderfully smoothed out - at the top going from G# to F# in pp is now quite manageable. It has such a rich low register too and it even seems to be better in tune.

I've only had time for a little try out but I  know I am going get so much pleasure from playing it over the coming weeks. Thank you so much for your skill and your care.

I can highly recommend Arthur Haswell from personal experience on my wood and metal flutes. He is skilful, patient, works to the highest standards and will go to seemingly endless lengths to solve a tricky problem.

I have one of the great Rudall Cartes that I played for over 40 years. According to Rampal when he tried it I should have given it to a museum because the pads didn't close and the keywork was slow! I have played a silver flute for the last 10 years and hate the sound; it lacks drama and dynamics and mellowness for my taste.

So I plucked up courage and asked Arthur to give my Rudall Carte a real overhaul (having been looked after by Mr Morley for all its life*). Wow - what a miracle he has achieved. The Rudall Carte is WONDERFUL. As good as new, and in perfect playing condition. A true joy again in my life.

Mind you any instrument Arthur puts his magic hands on becomes as good as new - in fact better.

Arthur Haswell's work on my (four Rudall Carte) wooden flutes was perfect. He is of the old school: he keeps at it until it is in perfect playing order. I have no hesitation in recommending him.

*Charles Morley worked at Rudall Carte before setting up on his own. Until his death he was one of the pre-eminent British repairers.
